I’d expect a hand to come out of the speakers and slap your over the head if you were caught smiling while listening to this. This is serious stuff!
It makes sense that it would be sober. The band is clearly inspired by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Nowhere is that more apparent than in the vocals that are delivered close to Cave’s own tobacco-soaked baritone. There are also traces of Tom Waits in the unorthodox drum patterns that are lined up across the tune.
It’s all part of the goth course until the song hits a sudden and unexpected rap-breakdown. You promised not to smile!
