Plattenbau – Tutankhamun
Genre: Post-Punk, Indie Rock, Alternative Rock
Similar artists: Joy Division, Wire, DAF, Suicide
Plattenbau looks to out-Berlin every other Berlin artist on the single Tutankhamun.
Berlin is one of the most terrifying and exciting places in the Western world, and just slightly in that world at that. It makes a great place and a strange place to live in. Berliners don’t sound, move, or talk like any other human being. You should get a load of the music they end up making.
It’s music that seemingly can’t be performed while wearing anything another than black. It’s music that doesn’t seem appropriate in the daytime. And, it’s music made by people that either through appearance or in actuality, sound both eternally damned and damn cool.
Plattenbau records that kind of dance-oriented, nocturnal post-punk number on Tutankhamun. But, beyond the menace and the spastic dance moves, there’s something that most musicians that inhabit the city might not have, a sense of humour. There’s a laugh to be had here even if you’ll have to wait to be alone in the morning to have it. We’ll be keeping tabs on this Plattenbau character. You might want to as well.
HOLM – In Gardens
Genre: Stoner Rock, Post Rock
Similar artists: Mogwai, Sigur Ros, Godspeed You! Black Emperor
HOLM are in the business of making time stand still on their song In Gardens.
Most good modern music is meant to tell you something quickly. Like a friend on the run, modern music tells you in the fewest amount of details what’s going on, where, and why you should care. Pop music generally doesn’t do that, preferring to lure you in on the promise that it will eventually give you some news. Don’t fall for it!
There’s another form of interesting modern musical style though that doesn’t exactly tell you anything, yet can mean an awful lot to everyone that opts to invest energy enough in understanding it.
This is music that is meant to act as a companion. It’s an art that never fully gets resolved, a riddle that never is never answered fully.
HOLM swim in these deep waters. Gardens isn’t so much a song, as various instruments producing rhythmical sound effects created as a kind of incantation against the passing of the time. The funny thing is that you wouldn’t bet against HOLM to work their magic here.
