Post Death Soundtrack – FAST APPROACHING RADIANT LIGHT

Pop and rock music, for the most part, have settled on familiarity as their default mode of operation. Artists and bands have learned enough about how the business works that, nowadays, they’re willing to do just about anything not to scare fans away.

Sure, this brings in the bucks. And, yes, it makes sense to appeal to people’s desires when you’re trying to book a show for your band. But do people really know what they want before the artist creates it and gives it to them? Unlikely.

That’s exactly why Post Death Soundtrack is willing to take some chances, ruffle some feathers, and get confused looks from those sitting at the back of the clubs in which this kind of music can be played.

Why should modern music help you feel at ease? What’s so wrong with feeling confused, anxious, troubled for a short spell? That’s what Post Death Soundtrack dares to ask on the surrealism-rock of “Fast Approaching Radiant Light.” Heavy and menacing, Post Death Soundtrack sounds like Deep Purple’s Ian Gillan trying to write experimental rock songs centred around his dreams. It’s thrilling to hear artists take these kinds of chances, and good to be scared once in a while.

Trails Pluto – Already Happened

Of all the retro music genres enjoying a revival, none makes better sense to this writer than the rise of psychedelic rock. In fact, I’m just surprised that this has not become the most popular genre across the still-existing world of guitar music.

The promise of psych-rock was that it would blow your mind and send you drifting into an imaginary world whenever you closed your eyes and put on a pair of headphones. While some thought of chemical refreshments as an enhancer, some argue that the music, in itself, is an alternative to those. Trails Pluto would likely support this idea.

Psych-rock may have enjoyed its heyday during the late 1960s. But everything is set up for its revival. First of all, technology has greatly improved. This means that bands with the right skill and imagination can truly whisk you away to a fairytale land. Secondly, there are just as many things audiences need to escape as there were back then.

“Already Hapened” by Trails Pluto of Sweden is the kind of psychedelic-rock meant to make you see colours and drift comfortably into the recesses of your brain. It’s hippie dreams manifested once more. And it is, of course, one of the more convincing psychedelic-rock sounds out of a whole batch of modern bands all attempting to sync their music up to your dreams.
