PRIMATES – Pasajero

What point would it be to travel if every new place you arrived at just looked the same as the place that you just left? What reason could you find for learning new things if they simply served the same purposes as the skills that you already have? Unless a brand new world of possibilities is waiting to be discovered, you’re unlikely to want to make an effort to go find them.

Old record collectors are, naturally, desperately envious of their younger counterparts. Music fans no longer have to rely on badly recorded cassettes traded from one person to another. They no longer have to pay fortunes for a record to be imported from a foreign country. English-speaking audiences, for example, have the good fortune of accessing PRIMATES’ debut EP, among other ways, through a strong internet connection.

But is it the same old rock n’ roll? No! While “Pasajero” features familiar-sounding musical dynamics, and while it includes catchy melodies and booming guitar parts, there’s a flavour to it that you won’t be able to quite make out. Maybe it’s a result of the Chilean influence, and maybe it’s simply the way that this new band reinterprets proven formulas. What’s clear is that this deserves uncovering. Great music, not quite like anything you’ve heard, is waiting to be discovered, and PRIMATES are among those that deserve your attention.

Sorry Cheryl – Chemical Relationships

Great people don’t listen to their therapists, but sure as hell might listen to a great song! Where’d you reckon you’re more likely to find pieces of life-changing truth? And, between Sigmund Freud and Keith Richards, who used their addiction to South American nose powder to help improve people’s lives more? You’re eureka moment might just be a guitar riff away.

But the musicians have to risk making themselves look like fools. Think of that for a second, and all that they put on the line for your benefit. They may not have graduated from some fancy school. But they’re going to have to be honest if it’s all going to work. They’ll need to write lyrics using their most personal and embarrassing confessions. How else is it going to work?

Sorry Cheryl, a Manchester-based band who are laughing hysterically watching the Oasis reunion unfold, produce the polished rocker “Chemical Relationships,” a song about dirty sidewalks and grim morning hangovers. Have you ever woken up in somebody else’s clothes in the middle of your grandma’s living room and thought you’d better write a song about it? No? Well, you’re not cut out for it. Sorry Cheryl, on the other hand, knows just how many people depend on these hooks and the confessions to go along with them. How else would it work?
