Pynch – Hanging on a Bassline
There’s something awfully depressing about the vast majority of big pop albums and the stars behind them. No, it’s not their artistic merit, or the fact that they’re promoted by gigantic corporations that could be just as effective at selling jeans as they are selling radio singles.
The real problem is that, for all of their success, all of these songs that most of us know mean very little to so many. Sure, they’ll play them at weddings, have them go viral on TikTok and ads for jeans, as it turns out, will love to include them.
But, unlike Pynch or the music that inspired the British band, very few will ever brag to their grandchildren about hearing it. Nobody will remember catching the pop artists in their prime. And, almost nobody will attach memories of their best times to this music that is so overplayed.
That’s why Pynch’s “Hanging on a Bassline” is a needed love song to smoky clubs, overcrowded dance floors and the local heroes who make kids want to save up their money for the weekend. Low-key, lo-fi and soulful in a way that will appeal only to people who have danced their youth away, “Hanging on a Bassline” is a song of hope. Pynch think you won’t easily be able to forget any of these moments of your youth that you can barely remember.
XOAN – False Alarms
The general population is obsessed with the idea that either the world is improving or else it is slowly rotting away. And, while, in theory, this makes it sound like all of us living in the world are playing for high stakes, it also means that everything we do has to be exhausting.
Self-help gurus have never been bigger. But in truth, they’ve never been out of business, either, nor have they ever been able to assist anyone to the point where they no longer needed additional help.
And, while you’re a work in progress, someone on a road to becoming the best version of yourself, rock n’ roll is messy, imperfect and has to happen now. That’s what XOAN think and whoever has opted to honour the moment and to make peace with all their imperfections will understand.
Besides taking on the self-help industry, XOAN’s “False Alarms” is a mighty catchy alt-rock jingle, a guitar-driven call to dance your fear of perfection away. After all, this song has come into being at this moment in time. Who knows if XOAN will top this, or even if the world will have been blown to bits by tomorrow? Would you really want to waste your time thinking about all the things that you’re doing wrong?
