Firentheft – Lay It Out
Genre: Grunge, 90s Rock, Alternative Rock
Similar artists: Alice In Chains, Deftones, Stone Temple Pilots, Godsmack
Grunge didn’t exactly invent any new style of music. Well, some might even argue that itself wasn’t a distinct musical genre at all. Grunge artists certainly would have described their own sound as a mash-up of several influences.
These bands dug inspiration from the aggressive nature of punk, from pummelling Black Sabbath riffs, and from the over-the-top singing of the likes of Robert Plant or Ronnie James Dio. It was music that was dark, but shiny. It sounded like Bad Company falling on hard times and looking to see how many fans they really had on their side.
Grunge managed to distil numerous influences and shine a light on the essentials. Firentheft managed to do the same with their single Lay It Out. The riffs echo the detuned, messy sound of Alice in Chains or Godsmack. The dynamic, powerful vocals echo Layne Staley or Scott Weiland. Firentheft offer us a history lesson in alternative rock and know just what they’re learning from it themselves.

Rock music, with its offshoot of punk, was supposed to represent endless freedom and innumerable possibilities for all. Concerts were a place where all were welcome, and where differences were treated with respect. People could be glamorous or grubby for the sake of doing something special and sharing it with their friends.
This idyllic image, of course, didn’t exactly work out. More than that, the stories of loud garage-rock guitar bands are usually told from only a few perspectives.
We all know about the bands that followed in the footsteps of the Stooges and the Sex Pistols. From Nirvana to The Strokes, there are plenty of stories of success.
I’m not much for making the whole story about gender, but, I think, that not enough is said about the female perspective on garage-rock and flourishing rock artists and groups that fit into that category.
Raising Ravens is ready to provide a crash course on the evolution of female-fronted garage-rock with the single In My Room. It’s a tune featuring bouncy, powerful guitars, confident vocals, and proof of where rock ended up.
