Sci Fi Book Club – The Path

Sci Fi Book Club is one band that is eyeing something more important for itself than merely playing small clubs and releasing internet singles. But, in truth, they’ve had the right mentors from whom to learn how to dream big.

When alternative rock bands started selling records back in the 1990s, everyone pretended to be shocked. But listen back to the earliest releases from bands like Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and, yes, even Nirvana.

That alt-rock sound is designed to feel too large for the clubs, to be pushed out into the streets and into arenas. While their anti-commercial stance was something different, this particular blend of music was always designed to appeal to large audiences.

That’s why the Sci Fi Book Club’s duo of musicians allow itself to be ambitious. The main idea of the single “The Path” is one about finding your way and sticking to it. That feels only fair. This is a big, radio-friendly rock single that’s simply too large, bombastic, and nicely crafted to be something that can be enjoyed by club crowds. Get this band onto a big stage right now!

SUPERCOBRA – Someday

People who’ve auditioned for anything must hate the ones who make the choices. They’ll walk out screaming: “But can’t they see what I have to offer? Can’t they recognise how well I can do certain things?”

The fact is that judges, if they’re any good, can see and hear what the hopefuls are able to do brilliantly. But they feel a great tinge of sadness when they also realise what the things that they cannot do are, and how, because of this, there will always be an imbalance if the wrong people are chosen.

Modern rock audiences often feel like these unfortunate talent scouts. SUPERCOBRA might be a band that tries hard to have it all. Their rivals, however, typically either have the energy or the tunes, and rarely both.

That’s the reason why SUPERCOBRA’s “Someday” is an exciting release. The band spends the brief three minutes of this single splitting itself between sounding like a rowdy punk band looking to whip the audience up into a riotous mood and sharing lovely, light melodies that tie the tune together. It’s a formula worth refining and a sound, at the moment, worth checking out.
