Richard Orofino – purfect
Genre: Bedroom / Lo-fi Pop, Lo-fi Rock, Indie Pop
Similar artists: Squirrel Flower, Salvia Palth, Starry Cat, Alex G, Dandelion Hands, Lowertown
If there is one thing that the internet has done, is allow music fans to hear songwriters that wouldn’t have been endorsed by major labels. I don’t mean this disparagingly. Record labels often don’t know much. But, they have a type just like an old millionaire scouting for a teenage trophy wife.
Lo-fi recorded, intimate, overly-emotional recordings have not only found their way on to the internet. They’ve also become a genuine listening proposition for a great number of people. It’s an alternative to even alternative music.
Richard Orofino finds that heartbreaking intimacy on the song purfect. If this doesn’t appeal to you immediately then forget about it. It means that it wasn’t made for you. It will, however, find many people that will immediately feel a connection to Richard Orofino’s troubled soul. It must’ve been made for them.
Scott Anthony – Otis
Genre: Blues, Singer-Songwriter, Americana
In art, some things need to be constantly changed, while others require someone capable of keeping the same. Both are tall orders. True innovators are capable of bringing their ideas to the masses are rare.
However, just as rare are the ones able to maintain art in its purest form. Many singers attempt to sing soul and blues music. It makes sense. Some of the greatest music belongs to these genres. Sadly, few have what it takes to pull it off.
Scott Anthony is a student of the soul masters, and, fortunately for him and for us, he can pull it off. Does this belong on a website dedicated to alternative music? In 2022, with very little of the music industry concerned with technique or genre legacies, this is as out there as it gets.
Thanks for the review! It means a lot to have a place among the eclectic group of artists you highlight here.
