Sid Rai – Eyes of Another

Time treads softly on, but even at the best of times, the world hardly makes much sense. It’s not just world events that are hard to comprehend, but news about them that makes you feel edgy. You likely get the same feeling when looking at your own life. Smart choices are supposed to get you where you want and need to go, but where is that really?

Life is certainly not designed to make a lot of sense. So, why do we expect pop songs to be entirely different? Why should a pop song be expected to tell you the whole and nothing but that in three or four minutes or less? Cleverly, Sid Rai’s music allows some of that chaos that surrounds and some of that dream dust of the nighttime to enter the picture on the artist’s newest single.

“Eyes of Another” is, lyrically, an aching confession about desiring truth, intimacy and the ability to be able to see things from a different perspective. However, when listened to closely, this also qualifies as a daring psych-rock number that allows randomness, as well as beautiful, unexplainable events, to make their way into the music. It’s a snapshot of a moment where everything could make sense, but once more, will not.

Lasael – Along With Gold

Nowadays, some good conversation is something that people have decided might be worth killing for. Well, if not murder itself, certainly there are many willing to move over countries, swim across the sea in their underwear, marry a stranger who they’ve only talked to on some forum about Pokémon cards. All of these are valid actions and speak to the need for connection that we all feel.

Still, I wouldn’t like the lady who sells me bread, or the young kid who hands me my coffee, to tell me about what they think in relation to the divinity, our relationship to it, and the meaning of our life here on this planet. I’m sure that it makes for a riveting dialogue, but I just don’t trust myself to spot the truth from the lies. I leave this type of philosophising to rock bands and internet gurus nowadays, personally.

In fact, a bit of exploration mixed with intellectual arrogance has always suited rock n’ rollers. Where would Lou Reed be if he didn’t think of himself, erroneously, smarter than everyone else? Lasael have a bit of that and some mighty interesting musical instincts that the band is following on “Along With Gold.” This is alt-rock turned psychedelic, a song about man failing to reach a consensus with the Heavens and becoming something akin to a loaded weapon. Coming from a rock band, I’m willing to believe it’s the truth, or some version of it.
