Should musicians be able to play their instruments competently? Most music critics will tell you that this isn’t exactly the most important thing. Most music teachers would tell you to go to your room and practice.
The fact is that the majority of classical composers have something in common with psychedelic rock bands. They both usually have a colossal body of work. This may sound impressive.
However, most of these write instrumental works. And when it comes to classical composers, most were tasked with writing a certain number of works in certain styles. Getting paid by the pound helps.
Still, DOOM GONG’s Hour in the Sun achieves a rare balance between technical ability and valid imagination. It does this by laying the groundwork through its vibe-building production. And it follows this up through a series of brilliant, surprising musical leads. If they continue to edit themselves like this, they’ll have quite a body of work as well.

What’s going to be the music that will define 2022? What songs will they play in the future when they make music about this era? Should they play Frank Sinatra or Elvis Presley songs? Maybe, but that won’t help viewers slip into the spirit of the times.
Nah, it should be something that everyone who refused to live in the moment would have hated. Is this not the route for any important pop-culture moment? First, it’s hated, then they make a Hollywood movie about it.
Like it or not, rock music is evolving. Pretty quickly too. It’s always moved like this. It’s always been a mirror of the times. And, when done well, it always encompasses the biggest thrills and greatest thrills of an era.
SkyDxddy’s ALIVE sounds like a modern video game. Like one that was released in 2022. Not one that came out five years or ten years ago. There’s no mistaking this fact! It’s digital hard-rock. It may well draw the ire of classic rock fans. But, then again, it’s supposed to do that.
