“Genius borrows nobly” proclaimed Ralph Waldo Emerson. And, everyone believed him. It took a while for Oscar Wilde to set the record straight. “Talent borrows, genius steals“, he claimed and fewer people believed him.
Surely work of any kind, especially in the arts, is something holy. Nobody can get by on theft. Ideas spring out of thin air as if summoned by a holy being. The great artists had greatness all along.
These are all myths, of course. The greatest artists know from where to take inspiration. And, they know not to be ashamed by it. eva’s great cover of corners’ Caught In Frustration helps prove this. It’s an updated version, delivered with great conviction as something wholly new to the world. This is work done by somebody that knows where they’re going.
Starberry – La La La La La Love
Genre: Lo-fi Rock, Indie Rock, Alternative Rock
Similar artists: The Buzzcocks, Talking Heads
People love to hate what other people love. Love songs, especially. You see love songs make some forget about their worries, feel special, or even help nurture a connection with someone else. To many others this is silly. Therefore, they hate silly love songs.
One of their issues, I suspect is that love songs sound entirely unrealistic. Most of the truly famous ones approach a state of dangerous sleeping-inducing Zoloft commercials. And, they dare pass this off as romance!
No, true romance is zany and creates anxiety. It sounds a lot like Starberry’s La La La La La Love. You have to respect a band that isn’t self-conscious and committed to creating a nasty, ugly, funny rock sound. This is what the Talking Heads might have written after a few cocktails and a day out riding the subway.
