With decades of data having been collected, we can now make clear calls on how music is likely going to be appreciated. For example, music that isn’t particularly cool but that is designed to offer mental comfort, we know, is bound to one day get back into focus.

Take a listen to what used to be called soft rock. The sweet, studio-centric sounds of the 70s are still being toured by the people who recorded those songs. As for modern pop music, it’s trying to use the very same set of strategies today. It goes being cool. It’s about offering relief.

Cereus Bright’s “Seven Wonders” is pop music made with therapy in mind. The song is not only titled after a Fleetwood Mac tune but reflects the Anglo-American quintet at their poppiest. Like an old man looking for religion, this, too, is ready to surrender and be healed.

Stephen Chopek – Gabrielle

Great pop songs are in such short supply that it’s nearly impossible to bury and forget one of those. Similarly, truly great songwriters don’t need to find immediate success. If they’ve had greatness thrust upon them, or if they’ve managed to acquire it somehow, their audience will find a way to find them.

Shane MacGowan is one of the greatest poets of his time. The songs that he has written with The Pogues, or even, The Popes, have found immortality. By extension, so has their author.

But talent such as MacGowan’s has to have revealed itself even in his earliest attempts to create art. The Nipple Erectors are one of the legendary punk-rock bands o the 1970s, and Shane was one of the most prominent figures in that scene. They never got anywhere except for writing a few exceptional slices of pop music.

We’re fortunate that Stephen Chopek has carried out the work of excavating “Gabrielle,” a  (nearly) lost classic from The Nips. Chopek reinterprets this poppiest of early MacGowan songs. And even though it might be missing some of the exuberance of late 70s London, it makes up for the earnestness of the performance.
