Steve Stout – some birds

Most people are content to dream their lives away, always looking for permission, or the opportunity from the Heavens above to go and change their lives, and a chosen few just take out a loan and buy a house in the country, worrying about the consequences and the leaky roof later. Which one will you be when the time comes?

Hopefully, you’ll end up living life a little bit like Steve Stout. If nothing else, your acquisition will make you more enjoyable at parties, give you something to talk about, and, if you are Mr Stout, might make its way into the Earthy folk-rock compositions that your new lifestyle has helped to inform.

“some birds” is a delightful song of freedom, hopeful and optimistic, winning out over all the nagging worries of the day-to-day. It’s not just a song written and recorded in a country home, but music that speaks of a silent revolution, of people choosing, whenever possible, to leave the big, noisy, dirty cities behind and seek their freedom instead.

Noah Derksen – Who Do You Wanna Be

The best thing that you can do for yourself and for all the people that you love is to bravely run away from the life that you’ve been given. Don’t even give it a second thought! Don’t allow the power of nostalgia to pull you back in!

Everyone’s born into a small world. And, it seems, nearly everyone is born surrounded by geniuses, people with colossal creative powers, folks with the ability to see the truth from the lies at all times.

Everyone eventually returns to find that the small world of their youth has remained just as small. People don’t change and time keeps on moving. It’s a heartbreaking tale and one that Noah Derksen captures perfectly.

The truth of the small town that never changes is sung on “Who Do You Want to Be.” The vocals are luminous and greet the characters in the song like an old friend giving a hug. It’s a song that sparkles. But the light comes from regrets, from a consistency that is damn right tragic.
