Supermilk – Many Thanks

If I could predict the future, would I be a really rich man? Would that be enough, or is there something much more subtle that is required? I can’t advise myself on what to invest in, and people saying that “green is the future” only help me halfway. Should you buy stock in the big-ol tech companies? War’s always big business, too, unfortunately.

How about pop music? Does all my experience make me any better in anticipating whether radio singles are bound to get shorter and more overly produced or longer and more Earthy sounding?

The single thing that I can tell you for sure is that the (at most) three-minute single is going to be a big part of the future, just as it was in the past. That ain’t never going away. The three-minute single is here to stay, ready to charm and hypnotize.

All real fans of pop music will tell you that creating sounds that are snappy, simple, and get resolved quickly is the most difficult trick of them all. Supermilk’s “Many Thanks” achieves just that. This is an artsy, quirky guitar-pop that ends before you know it, but not before it’s delivered a few hooks that will make you remember it the next time that you encounter it. This is like taking a tour of an art gallery while wearing rollerskates and being aggressively pushed by someone through the doors.

Au Revoir Heart – Animals

The past looms large over us all, and especially over modern pop stars trying to write a hit. Sure, that’s something best left out of the official PR statements. The majority of those go on about the amazing advancement in recording technique, musical equipment, and songwriting visions. It is, after all, what the music business people think that the audience wants to hear.

And perhaps, that’s why audiences get confused as well. They set out looking for something new and modern that would transform pop music into something wholly novel. However, the things that typically capture their attention get them excited and feed into dreams, which are sounds that, for the vast majority of the last 60 years, have been used to great effect.

Au Revoir Heart’s “Animals” is, at the heart of it, a very pretty, mysterious-sounding pop-rock ballad that borrows heavily from sounds popularized in the 1960s. If it proves anything, it’s that the songwriter has good taste. And, if the delivery reminiscent of Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner proves anything else, it is that the performer also has a clear plan in mind for how to make this successful right now. Some things don’t require changes, just clever adjustments.
