The Broken Vinyls – Smalls

There are all these people trying to predict music just like they do the weather. They’ve got a bunch of charts to work with, and they’ll tell anyone who will listen that music is, honestly, just a bunch of numbers that you have to work out.

These are terrible people. But, more worryingly, they’re talentless people. And, even worse, they’re this way, probably, because they’ve never been hurt or happy enough to make music really feel like it’s worth something.

The rest of us want from music the thing that a good talk about having a broken heart just won’t provide. The rest of us expect songs like the ones made by The Broken Vynils, songs that make you feel like life is a colossal tragedy with an even greater happy end.

In fact, that’s why The Broken Vynils opt to get the scariest, most impressive sound out of their guitars that they can on their recent single. Actually, this is why “Smalls” sounds like someone kicking you in the heart repeatedly. But, once it’s over, the song’s redemptive qualities are undeniable. It’s too bad that only some people are able to feel this bad so that music can make them feel so good.

Door d’Or – What You Want

There’s never anything good about war, nor anything natural, regardless of how much effort your news networks may put into trying to convince you otherwise. War is abhorrent and, frankly, judging by the way that recent conflicts have affected the fortunes of all people throughout the world, immensely impractical nowadays. Yet, will military conflicts ever stop?

Probably not. And this has less to do with actual power than with the perception of power. Door d’Or are just some of the rock artists inspired by our general dehumanisation. The band dares to ask a direct, important question: “Just what it is that people want and what they would do if they ever managed to get it?”

The answer could be the only information we need to preview the rest of human history. Fittingly, “What You Want” is delivered with passion and intensity. But there’s a hint of cynicism that the band also places in the music, which I share. This is also a rock song that raises the question of whether anything will ever be enough for power-hungry despots. Sadly, we all know the answer to that query.
