The Brothers Union – Mama Tried

The things that you recall when you’re at your best are the good times and the dumb decisions. You’ll probably find yourself among friends, sharing a drink and raising a glass to that Summer when you joined the band as a drummer, even though you couldn’t keep a beat, and ended up trying to play music on some beach in Greece while sunburnt and in love.

Then again, the things that you tend to remember at every other moment in a day will, likely, be how you neglected your studies to push that van all over to Southern Europe, how you spent your entire savings and the way that your parents tried to advise you of choosing something different. Finding a way to put yourself in balance with these ideas is what The Brothers Union sing about.

“Mama Tried” is, at the very same time, an earnest punk-rock tune about the good ol’ days being so much better than whatever today happens to be, and the realisation that smarter decisions could’ve been taken along the way. This is a track that will please fans of Springsteen-styled songs delivered with some punk gusto and will make you want to scratch back to the past in order to find some suitable answers.

mirabelle. – Fuck No

Those who do not have a powerful enemy to fight against will just need to invent one. Failure to do so will, almost certainly, result in abject mediocrity. Those who have nothing to push against are the easiest to be pushed over.

You then look at glamorous French punk-rock mirabelle. And listen to the group’s Californian-inspired sound and, of course, you conclude that these teenagers have nothing to complain about. The future is open before them.

But just think about all the other young groups with richer parents, better industry connections and more money to buy the latest gear? Or, if you want to be crueller still, think about all those groups that have the luck of coming out of California, the place that lingers in the sound of mirabelle.

Will that stop them? “Fuck no” is meant to be a brash, snotty letter of intent, a punk-rock credo. Sure, it’s a bit cartoonish and theatrical. But you have to admire the attitude and the way that the highly produced sound manages to blend emo, old-school pop-punk and alt-rock for this one.
