The Duskwhales – Please & Thank You

One of the biggest enemies of the people collecting the checks on behalf of record companies is video games. It started out as a bit of pocket money thrown on playing an arcade game. However, the gaming industry is not gigantic and, in many ways, more important than the music business.

Now, on every video game,  which tends to cost a few times what a CD or record would, the developers advertise, typically how many hours of enjoyment you’ll get out of that product. Call it respect for the loyal customers. Call it a clever marketing ploy. It all works.

This works completely differently from how most music labels advertise their artists at the moment. The best that most of them can say is that their artists’ music can accompany a 30-second TikTok video. Writing jingles is fine, but it feels like something is missing.

There are still some who believe in making music mysterious and placing it in a world that is deep and dark enough and that it will require time and energy to get through it. Such musicians are The Duskwhales. Their band’s single “Please & Thank You,” with its 60s psychedelia-inspired sound, feels like telling secrets. It’s the mood and presentation that let you know that you’re joining a world of sound that is not meant to be disposable. Some bands still create music that can give you hours of enjoyment, and they’re the ones worth paying your full attention to.

Holy Roller Baby – “Ant Hills”

It’s no wonder that so many people associate classic rock music with the radio. It’s not only the fact that some of the best-known songs in the genre have earned their fame by being featured in it. But just like finding a good station involves fiddling with the button that adjusts the wavelengths, so do great rock songs seem to come into existence.

There are thousands and thousands of ways to write a song and a few rules that we are told songwriters must obey. But knowing this doesn’t make coming out with something great any easier. A great rock tune is usually a simple song, a groove-set vibration that captures the right frequency and fights desperately to hold on to it for the entire length of the piece. It’s nothing other than this, and it is more than enough.

Holy Roller Baby’s “Ant Hills” got a great groove. It feels like setting cruise control on a highway that’s been emptied of all other cars. All you’re left with is the sound of the motor, the plushness of the seats, and the predictable road forward. And that’s enough. Holy Roller Baby sound like a great grunge band that’s been trying to write a liv show opener. The good news is that they found one right here.
