The Endless Mountain Derelicts - “Got God Damn”

There are certain people that are very hard to stop from their mission, even if their aim is just to bring rebel music into the hearts of people. The Endless Mountain Derelicts are those kinds of people.

The group doesn’t just revel in the joys of rock n’ roll. The “Good Got Damn” EP sounds like the work of people who’ve hidden themselves from the world in order to deliver this and who intend to do this again and again. Yeah, The Endless Mountain Derelicts know the pain brought on by rock n’ roll just as well and welcome it.

Rock n’ roll is, of course, a blanket term. If you want to get technical, the music played by The Derelicts has plenty in common with country, folk, and punk. Although not exactly cow-punk music, the EP’s opener, “State Lines”, rings out almost like an old Springsteen number played faster, with distortion and talking about a life voluntarily spent on the outside.

The Endless Mountain Derelicts’ heroes may be known troublemakers. But clearly, the band has also taken a keen interest in the songwriting craft of the musicians that they cherish. The acoustic lead “Ain’t It a Shame”, with its passionate vocals and 70s-styled lead guitars, proves this.

On “Burn it Down,” the Derelicts create their version of the blues, with the song serving as a reminder of wasted days and consequences. It doesn’t all get too heavy, as the group promise future hell-raising on the Fridays yet to come.

The rest of the EP strikes a similar balance between bittersweet memories and hopeful dreams of rebel rousing. “The Ditch” is a very good piece of storytelling, complete with well-arranged backing vocals. “Light that Fuse” uses the songwriter’s experience as a parable about the importance of both good and bad choices.

The EP’s closing track, “Cole vs. the Colt,” gives the true measure of the group. The Endless Mountain Derelicts are a party group made up of people with blue and heavy hearts. The vocals that arrive on the chorus of this track, especially, find the right balance between grit and sweetness.

Life’s sometimes sad but certainly worth fighting for like hell. The Endless Mountain Derelicts sound like they’re doing just that and have found a way to capture this on record.
