The Thing With Feathers – Waste My Revenge
Genre: Indie Rock, Alternative Rock
People like me don’t care about the future of rock n’ roll. We’re snobs! Many of us dislike what’s on the radio. Some of us gloat about never listening to the hits.
There’s even a group of us that believe unknown, underground music is the best kind.
Rock n’ roll could die, and we wouldn’t care. We’d still find somebody recording dissonant, absurd songs to get our jollies from. What a bunch of jerks we are!
But, of course, and fortunately, not everyone is like this. People still like to hear rock songs on the radio. And rock stars are still needed. They are ambassadors for guitar music. Ideally, they appeal to the largest demographic.
The Thing With Feathers’ Waste My Revenge is a song aimed at radio and mainstream playlists. It’s music designed for arenas. It’s ear candy. Why not? Somebody has to do it. Rock can’t rely on the underground. Not if it wants to continue thriving. Writing commercial rock is looked down upon by some. Still, appealing to nearly everyone is no simple task.
The Franklys – Before You Hit The Ground
You go to the sequel of an action movie knowing what to expect. If the producers and directors don’t deliver on that promise, you feel upset. Likely you write a bad review. Maybe, you even ask for your money back. You want your time refunded.
In music, like in other forms of entertainment, certain genres create expectations. Sure, wildly experimental music does still exist. Microgenres are created every day. But, the expectation label on those is different.
Garage-rock might just be the genre that lives closest to the soul, what rock n’ roll promised to be. Yet, it is a genre where the kicks come just where you expect they would. It’s not meant to surprise you but thrills you in other ways.
The Franklys’ Before You Hit The Ground is a convincing piece of bubblegum-pop meets garage-rock. It’s easy on the ears with its playful melodies. And it’s also driven by enough gusto to push you out of your seat. You’ll be glad to know that you’ll get what you expect with this one.
