Ruby Weapon – Oscar Mayer
Genre: Art Rock, Psychedelic Rock, Math Rock
There are countless scenes in movies or modern literature in which a character faces death and immediately begins playing scenes of their mind as if standing in a movie theatre. Almost all of the time, the scenes being remembered are dramatic, or of grave importance to the character.
The same happens when the character’s dreams are shown. Every welder and soccer star becomes Salvador Dali all of a sudden. The truth may not be as glamorous. For the majority of us, even the most immersive dreams may end up being a mishmash of banal scenes with which our scenes have been confronted throughout life.
A lot of dreams are like that, I reckon. Ruby Weapon’s Oscar Mayer sounds a lot like it. Or, as the writer might be pleased to read, it sounds like Radiohead being commissioned to write Kid A-type music for hot dog commercials. It’s the dreaminess and psychedelic of the ordinary that Ruby Weapon seems to capture.
The Luka State – Oxygen Thief
Genre: Indie Pop, Garage Rock, Alternative Rock
People who begin working on a creative project are usually worried about how to present it to an audience. Certainly, they need to display their work with confidence. But, most likely, they’ll also assume that the audience will either think love them for their bravery or hate them for their pompousness.
The truth is that audiences will do both. We live in an age where everyone has artists for which they’ll declare their love or their hatred. This can’t change anytime soon. Confidence, however, is most likely to get an artist’s foot through the door.
The Luka State sound and look confident on their promo single Oxygen Thief. They appear as a band that’s not courting the public’s attention. Rather they are delivering their work and expect that the audience be thankful for what they receive. It is something that suits their alternative-rock style. And, it’s something that is worthy of praise in our book.
