The Oxys – Idiot Box
If anything, we brought it upon ourselves! In our naivety, we brought disease into our homes and were even happy to save up on the money needed to purchase it. Now, nearly everyone that we know is infected. The Oxys are still helping us see beyond the wall.
It used to be that families would fill out a jar for months and months to purchase the latest in home entertainment – a television. What inevitably followed was that everyone in the family, once the TV had been acquired, couldn’t leave its side.
And while the television was criticised for manipulating the views of the people sitting in front of it, in recent years, if anything, the business it runs has only diversified. Nowadays, most of us spend most of our waking days in front of the screen of a laptop or a telephone.
Aren’t we a bunch of losers? The Oxys certainly think so and might have a point. “Idiot Box” is a pop-punk protest song against the tools that brainwash us every day and that we dutifully spend our money on. And, do The Oxys believe things are going to get better? Watch time’s growing every year, and people are getting dumber by the second. We’ve been infected, and the best we can do is shake our fist while listening to a punk song about it.
Perkele – Sail Away
Are you not entertained by giant machines crashing into each other and blowing up in a cloud of smoke? Does your heart not start pounding when you find yourself in a fast machine flying at high speed? And, don’t tell me that you’re not tempted to put your fist in the air and chant along with others when the proper song encourages you to do that.
If none of these things catches your fancy, I’d seek an appropriate physician. Perkele is the sort of band that appeals to those basic sensitivities in the same way that the crowd chanting of a rowdy stadium crowd pulls in supporters each weekend. The prophets may not have dedicated much time to it, but singing a song of freedom with your mates while slightly pissed is one of the things that improves most lives.
With this in mind, Sweden’s Perkele bring in as many “Oh, oh, oh” and “Yeah, yeah, yeah” chants as you can shake a footy club scarf at for “Sail Away.” Blending the punk-rock basics with old Nordic tales of adventures on the high seas, the group creates something for those seeking a bit of courage. This is music for great challenges, or for memorable Saturday nights out with friends.
