Genre: Pop Punk, Indie Rock, Alternative Rock
Pop-punk upstart The Frst is looking to drum up some excitement with the new single “Murderabilia,” a track produced together with the legendary Eagles Of Death Metal.
Everyone who wishes to work in a creative field ought to hear the news once in a while. They won’t like what they hear, but it’s a necessary evil. Similarly, they should go watch the latest Hollywood movies, even if they don’t like them. And, naturally, they should know what’s on the charts, even if they don’t listen to pop music.
Back in the day, spy agencies used to do the same. They could not escape not to. Frequent mentions of war in news stories or books published in a particular area of the world knew that they needed to get prepared. Frequent songs about celebration knew that they could get the upper hand in negotiation.
The Frst x Eagles Of Death Metal’s “Murderabilia” is a good indicator of where pop-rock is at the moment. With slick production and sounds reminiscent of pop-punk, the murder mystery track is a fun light entry. But with its large chorus and dramatic performance, it is also a fateful indicator of where pop music is heading for the time being.
The Rainman Suite – Don’t want to wake up
Genre: Punk Rock, Pop-punk
The Rainman Suite are true believers in the old-school values of campy, highly melodic horror-punk. Is this where pop music has been hiding?
That’s not to say that pop hits aren’t available everywhere. Regardless of your lifestyle, you’ll find it very hard to avoid the newest chart entries of some of the important record labels’ most important “artists.” From movies to radio stations, from television shows to the music played at the mall, it’s unavoidable.
The thing is that there’s not much music left in those hooks. You won’t have trouble either finding videos lecturing us on the consistent dumbing down of music. Melodies are the first to go. Where once songs became hits on the power of their melodic sequences, new Taylor Swift or Nicki Minaj hits often feature one-note vocal parts.
The Rainman Suite’s “Don’t want to wake up” is a quirky horror-themed track. But it’s also a brilliantly crafted tune, complete with excellent, 50s-styled melodies to accompany the bravado and tough guy persona. Is this where pop music has been hiding? If so, we’re holding on to a great secret.
