Tommy and the Teleboys – Sarevokk

Spend a colossal time doing any particular thing, and it is very likely that you’ll get very good, go crazy or a combination of both. That sounds dangerous. And, perhaps, we’re fortunate that modern life offers us so many distractions that few of us are bored enough, unstimulated enough, to take the time to get great at something that might impress others.

Most pop-rock songs are written using formulas. A good number of them are written by a committee in the same way that Alexandre Dumas would’ve instructed a dozen poor writers to finish and tidy one of his novels. The music business is a conveyor belt. For the most part, if you’ve consumed what it has to offer long enough, you know what you’re going to get.

It’s refreshing to hear music that feels as if it was made by people who spent an inordinate number of hours together playing music and who might’ve been driven a bit mad by the process. Tommy and the Teleboys’ tense, anxious “Sarevokk” is that piece of music. This is not merely another post-punk song. It’s a song that doesn’t follow a pre-designed strategy using the kind of mathematics that only makes sense in the world of the band.

Benefitting from a striking music video, this is really an experience and a challenge to the numerous bands making a similar but more watered-down version of the same sound.

Jul Ruler – What I’ve Got

Rock musicians used to be arrogant little bastards. But the best of them didn’t just brag about all the cars they owned or all the movie stars that they’d gone to bed with. The very best were provocative, talked about the books they read, and took marvellous changes in their personal lives. They provided great quotes in interviews. And, they made it very hard to ignore whether or not you actually liked their work.

What books do modern rock stars read? To what weird, exotic places do they travel in order to find inspiration, and what philosophies do they borrow for their own lives? There’s no reason that you should know this. That’s because the majority of modern music stars aren’t very interesting. The best that you can say about a few of them is that they can play the guitar really fast or sing incredibly high notes. That’s all.

Jul Ruler’s “What I’ve Got” is a great track with a marvellously interesting character. It’s a poem, really, but one that sounds as if it was composed by an Italian Jean Genet figure while standing underneath a bridge. Every line in it is essential, and each one raises questions about where this character came from and how much of what he’s saying is the truth. Most importantly, it sounds like an intriguing musician, and there ain’t many of those around. “What I’ve Got” is great.
