Brad Sample – Getaway Driver
Genre: Country, Americana
Similar artists: Tom Petty, Lukas Nelson, Dwight Yoakam, Marcus King Band, Buddy Miller, Bryan Adams, Fleetwood Mac
Contrary to popular belief, it’s not so much that life is easier on the silver screen. It’s sure damn more exciting. People the movie stars parading around them not only because of the confidence that they exude. They also watch them because of the interesting, dangerous lives that they live.
A lot of the best kind of rock music, through the ages, has strived to do a similar thing. Sure, there are songs about simple, ordinary things. The ones that aim low and reach a creative peak are rare though.
Most of the best songs have an innate sense of drama about them. Take Brad Sample’s Getaway Driver. It’s a tune that sounds like the alternate soundtrack to a long lost Steve McQueen movie. And, Brad Sample’s excellent singing only adds to the sense of drama. It makes one feel like they’re right there, on the screen with the stars.
Ty Gold – Bonfire
Genre: Indie Rock, Alternative Rock
Similar artists: Arctic Monkeys, Iggy Pop, The Dead Weather, Brittany Howard
Entertainment magazines love to report on stars that never expected to “make it”. They all have stories about working on a farm, milking the cows, then being plucked from obscurity and being given a life of riches and fame.
This is, of course, not true, and hasn’t been true for nearly a century. It makes for a good copy though. Unlike what you’ve been told, the stars of tomorrow are sweating it out in the trenches.
And, in a bid for success, many are doing quite a bit of reverse engineering. This is the case with Ty Gold’s Bonfire. This is a bluesy, palatable rock number featuring rap percussion. It echoes the rock groups that have managed to have hits using this sound in the past few years. And, it does a great job. Ty Gold makes dark, exciting music, and makes people who can’t dance think otherwise.
