Unknown Venus – Pinned
It’s no coincidence that so many rock and pop musicians perform with masks nowadays. What used to be a rarely-seen gimmick is now a valid choice for those looking for a career in the music business.
Of course, bands will sell this to their managers and labels in an attempt to create a mystique around the music. It’s something that will get people talking and debating various theories as to the identities of the musicians.
But in reality, most of them are just scared and, possibly, sick of oversharing details of their lives. With everyone now online and so much of anyone’s life in danger of being exposed, revealing your true self is really an act of bravery.
Unknown Venus is a brand-new songwriter. But this is not stopping this musician from delivering dreamy indie-rock compositions, like “Pinned,” that are of a confessional and heartfelt nature. The production and sweet vocal melodies might be enough to lure your focus away from the lyrics. But those might just be the best part, with Unknown Venus delivering confidently the kinds of words that many would hesitate to write down even in their diary. It’s a really brave start!
Dr. Rocket – Running in Circles
The rules that govern the Universe are pretty simple to understand and very hard to avoid. They make rich men richer and poorer men even poorer. Those who find their mojo never seem to lose it, and those who never had it in the first place shouldn’t bother looking for it.
One of those cliches that ends up being confirmed by the Universe every chance it gets is that depressed people aren’t a lot of fun to be around. It’s not just that they weep and moan. One could get used to that. It’s mostly that the sadness has robbed them of the qualities that help them to be good company.
But there are exceptions. The really special people are depressed and see the humour and absurdity in this. It’s as if they’re watching a slow video of a car crash in which they’re involved and can’t stop giggling. Those people are a great company and, you’d imagine, terrible drivers.
Dr. Rocket’s “Running in Circles” is a song about being depressed, having a bit of ADHD, and always running into the same walls. But it’s not a drag. It’s marvellously entertaining, and there are no lines about blaming the songwriter’s parents for their troubles. It’s just great melodies over clever lyrics. This is all means that this is a good song and that you should definitely consider inviting Dr. Rocket to one of your dinner parties.
