Vansire – Rinkside
Yeah, the world’s a messed-up place. And judging by all the evidence, by all the stories you’ve lived through and the ones being told to you, it could all be getting worse. But, what are you going to do about it? Is it really worth your time on this planet to start shouting at your television, or fix all your weekend plans around protesting and waving a flag?
There’s plenty in this world to get angry about, sure. But, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t many things worth enjoying. And, each era of music has had its particular musical trends designed to soundtrack this feeling of ease and comfort. Perhaps it’s escapism, sure. But, just why should we deny ourselves the feeling that things can only get better?
Vansire’s sound on “Rinkside” is marvellously interesting because it seems to capture within less than 3 minutes most of the easy-listening production trends of recent decades. This is music with a jazz swing, cool indie and the modern yacht-rock-like sounds of chillwave. It’s music for a holiday and well designed at that. And who doesn’t need a bit of a break from time to time?
MARIA SAGA – In Silence
Have we settled the debate yet? Does pop (and by extension rock) music have any responsibility on the choices we make, on our behaviour, on the way that we develop as human beings? Surely, it’s not just another thing that can promote any ideas and get away with it regardless of how those end up inspiring others.
Pop music, more than anything, is supposed to accompany our falling in and out of love. But shouldn’t it say something about who we should fall in love with in the first place? Shouldn’t it advise us enough so that we don’t make catastrophic decisions that we will later regret? MARIA SAGA certainly believes that is the case.
I really like “In Silence,” first of all because it dares to share a different idea from most other indie pop love songs. For Maria Saga, the ideal is to find a partner with whom you can share the joys, the talks and, most importantly, the laughter. I tend to agree, and I am drawn by the warmth of the singing and the clever production here. I think you might feel a similar way.
