Vigilant Sun and TV Blackout Reviewed

Vigilant Sun – Full Circle

You regret not writing any of those thoughts down. And, certainly, let me tell you, erasing old, dumb song demos recorded in your teenage years is a mistake that you’ll find yourself struggling to find forgiveness for.

For all the experience that we add, and for all the skills, hopefully, that we manage to sharpen through the years, it’s the innocence, the ambition and, frankly, the ability to feel things during our younger years that cannot be replicated later on.

Vigilant Sun made gritty alternative-rock from a place of personal anguish and deep hope during their high-school days. And, smartly, the band has returned to that place now as adults.

“Full Circle” captures some of the enthusiasm and the fears typical of teenage years. It’s a special moment captured in time forever and one that Vigilant Sun is now strengthening thanks to years of playing music and being in a band.

TV Blackout – Eyes Burn Red

Hard times are coming! That’s not just the latest news slogan that some television station is trying to sell to you in a desperate bid to have you tune in tomorrow and the day after that. It’s the truth. It’s routine. And, depending on how you look at things that are announced and inevitable, it’s not such a terrible thing anyway.

It’ll hurt, though. Damn, it will feel terrible. And, surely, you’ll forget that these sorts of things come and go in the life of anyone. You’ll feel sad for yourself, for what’s going on, and you’ll be desperate for something or someone that will make sense of your pain. And that’s when you’ll miss music more than ever. TV Blackout is here to say, ” I’m with you through those dark days.

Fittingly, “Eyes Burn Red” is the kind of sound that brings to mind 90s alt-rock and grunge emotional confessions of bands like Live or Silverchair. It’s a sound, however, soaked in large, powerful guitar tones and lyrics about screwing up, knowing you’ve done it, and struggling to find something to hold on to. Many will understand where this comes from, and many will find a way to connect.
