Force Model – Security Theater
Genre: Post-Punk
Similar artists: Drive Like Jehu, Polvo, Marbled Eye, Goggs
One must only look at the way that the advertising world treats art to understand its real value. Are most advertisements attempts at humor? Humor makes money. Do most advertisements feature beautiful clothes? Beautiful clothes make money.
It’s somewhat endearing to see that the ad world’s view of guitar music hasn’t changed. Sure, bands featuring drums and electric guitars aren’t really a new concept anymore. Yet, try and create advertisements that require energy and passion, and you’ll find it hard to substitute the sound of these kinds of groups.
The guitar can still sound large and terrifying, like a muscle car speeding past a kindergarten. Force Model’s Security Theater is terrifying, especially since it sounds like the post-punk group has spent a lot of time indoors, sharpening their caustic post-punk sound. The lyrical content of Force Model’s sound might still be a bit of a mystery, but, perhaps, it’s better if we keep things this way.
VOWWS – One By One
Genre: Indietronica
Art of any kind moves cyclically. It seems that almost all schools of art begin by showing the world how it should be. Harmony is emphasized. Thoughts are directed towards things of a lighter, more graceful nature.
Then someone comes along and opposes these ideas. Surely that is not what the world really looks and sounds like? Certainly, this is not what people need to deal with on a daily basis?
VOWWS take a page from the book of scary electronica on One By One and show the world how it must appear to most people. It’s a sound that is both alluring and disturbing. It’s dance music made to sound like a car crash. And, it features a vocal meant to rise over the clamor of the streets. At least, VOWWS are honest, eh?
