There was a collective shiver in the legacy rock world the moment that tribute acts of their work started sprouting out all across the world and filling clubs on a Saturday night. But the now famous tribute acts also had a moment of terror by the time AI-created music began being championed by techno-populist websites.
“But they’re stealing our act!” That’s exactly what each thought of the other, and they were not wrong. Clearly, there was a market for music that makes people remember the good ol’ days.
Hopefully, there is also a more sizeable market for audiences who hope to witness new great ol’ days and who see in the classic rock bands a platform for something that has not yet been created.
Waves_On_Waves x Crimewave’s “Black Hole” could have easily been just another of the many bands trying to ride Led Zeppelin’s sound toward success. That’d be fine. From Kingdom Come to Greta van Fleet, many have been on the steal. Instead, what the collaboration yields is a fresh perspective on the familiar blues-rock template, a meditative sound, and, sure, a nice demo of the excellent singing tone. It can be done, but it takes a whole lot of bravery to attempt it.
Old Shoe – Adeline
Genre: Classic Rock, Psychedelic Rock
When anyone posts about their love of listening to an album the whole way through, you are right to be suspicious that the person writing isn’t exactly a spring chicken anymore. Regardless, the joys of digging into a piece of music fully and committing to it deserve praise. Old Shoe believe in those old-fashioned values and correctly assesses that others just like them must be out there looking for the same.
Of course, in the live music arena, it’s the so-called jam bands that get closest to inspiring that kind of commitment. Using Grateful Dead and, later, Phish as templates, the jam bands are known for lengthy concerts, a love of roots music, and a tendency to give every band member a solo long enough to satisfy concertgoers in need of a bathroom break.
But it’s born out of a genuine love for music and the interaction between players. Old Shoe’s “Adeline” is a carefully written storyline complete with reggae-rock backing and a nod toward the country-folk songwriters of the 1970s. Naturally, this is only a four-minute song and requires a good deal of restraint from the musicians, who seem to be champing at the bit to extend this into a 20-minute live epic.
