Whispellia – Weighed Down with Desire – Reborn

Secretly, everyone who arrives for a gig of a band that is just starting out hopes that the band members will visibly appear to be cooler than anyone else who is in the audience. It may be shallow, but the people who’ve come for the show may well walk out when they notice that the singer has really ugly shows or that they’ve written a rock opera which they want to narrate as they’re playing it.

Musicians know this, too, of course. This kind of attention is a blessing and a curse. It turns most of the ones who end up succeeding into terrible ego maniacs who talk for hours about themselves, their successes and where they buy their shows. It can make others give up the music dream as well once they realise that they’ll never manage to be as cool as audiences would like them to be.

Whispellia’s “Weighed Down with Desire – Reborn” is a soulful indie/psych-rock tune delivered with massive confidence. What are the musicians confident in? Their smoothness, of course. The vocals slide into the upper registers easily, and the band plays the music as if working on a Barry White tribute album. They’ve got some mysterious rock elements in them as well. And they know Whispellia sounds good when they bring all these elements together. There’s no way someone in the audience is cooler once they start playing.

Deadly Spirits – Why Did You Do (The Things You Do)

Out of all the eras of pop music, the one that holds the greatest fascination over the public at large is the music made during the decade of the 1960s. What’s the one that holds the least amount of interest? The music is being made right now, and as time washes over this period, things will only get worse with your children. They will surely ask you why you didn’t play a role in stopping this monstrosity.

That’s why it is only natural that you would still find groups assembling and taking on the responsibility of feeding the magic pill of 60s retro psychedelic rock to modern audiences. It’s a worthwhile endeavour. But it’s also worth pointing out that the 1960s are no longer viewed, by most, as simply the decade of love and flowers. It’s a sinister period, and trusting any hippie would prove foolish. Who knows what weapons they got hiding under their tie-dye shirts?

Deadly Spirits are a rock group from Sweden, a country that typically produces many bands that recreate old American and British rock n’ roll to a magnificent detail. “Why Did You Do (The Things You Do)” promises to be a foot-stomping rager, and it does all these things. But it also shows traces of the mysterious, nasty and downright evil flow of 1960s music. It’s something that still holds a fascination, yes, and one of the reasons why we all try to return to those times.
